Land and agriculture in Uganda
Agriculture is a key productive sector in Uganda’s economy and is the mainstay of the rural economy. It accounts for 40% of GDP, 61% of export earnings and more than 85% of employment. Of the country’s estimated 28.2 million people in 2007, close to 88% live in rural areas, majority of which is engaged in agricultural activities for survival and constitute the bulk of the poor in the country. These smallholder farmers, who unfortunately, lack the investment capital to improve production and develop the agriculture sector, contribute over 94% of all agriculture production in the country and nearly all food production. The general agricultural systems depend on rain fed crop and livestock farming.
CAPCA is an association of eight partners formed by the Catholic dioceses in the central region and other development organizations subscribing to similar objectives. The organizations implementing the CAPCA project are:
• Caritas Kampala: the socio-economic development arm of the catholic church responsible for development activities in Kampala Diocese.
• Caritas Kasanaensis: the socio-economic development arm of the catholic church responsible for development activities in Kasana-Luweero Diocese.
• TWG: (Tusuubira Women’s Group) which is a grass root women organization based in Kampala Archdiocese.
• Caritas MADDO (Masaka Diocesan Development Organization): the socio-economic development arm of the catholic church responsible for development activities in Masaka Diocese.
• CIDI (Community Integrated Development Initiatives): a national Non-Governmental Organization conducting socio and economic development activities in Rakai and other districts of Uganda.
• Caritas Lugazi: the socio-economic development arm of the catholic church responsible for development activities in Lugazi Diocese.
• Caritas Kiyinda Mityana: the socio-economic development arm of the catholic church responsible for development activities in Kiyinda Mityana Diocese.
• Caritas Uganda the overall coordinating body for the socio-economic development of the catholic church dioceses.
